What Are Cookies
Cookies are small bits of data stored in a text file on your computer within a web browser. They allow websites to remember information about your visit, to enhance functionality, and to substantially improve the user experience while using the website.
By themselves, cookies are harmless; they cannot harm your computer. However, this does not mean they are not danger because they are.
If you are not careful, cookies can be used to store sensitive, personal information across platforms. These, in turn, can be used to track your movements on the internet and discover your habits. OpenVerseChallenge.com believes these types of cookies should be banned from the internet and therefore assures its users that only temporary cookies containing senseless information that only the website itself can understand are being used.
Restricted Session Cookies (temporary)
A session cookie is a simple text file that OpenVerseChallenge.com installs on its user's device for temporary use. It helps track real-time changes in the visitor's activity through the website, such as voting and keeping a footprint of the challenges the user visits while surfing the website. OpenVerseChallenge.com has session cookies enabled by default, as it helps the web pages load faster and makes navigation easier. These cookies also help to enhance the user experience and provide additional layers of security protecting the website from malicious use.
Also known as a transient cookie or a temporary cookie, a session cookie is only active during each browsing session and is programmed to be automatically deleted at the end of each browsing session when the user exits their web browser. Users can also restrict the use of session cookies during their browsing sessions manually. However, this will effectively disable much of the website and make it unavailable to the user.
Local Storage
Local Storage, though the same as cookies, means the data stored persists even after the user closes the browser or restarts the computer. The only way to remove data from your browser's local storage is by manually deleting the records using the settings in your browser, or a browser plug-in that manually clears all footprints from your browser's history.
OpenVerseChallenge.com uses local storage to save images for transport from the webpage to the database server. Local storage may also be used to store temporary encryption keys, protecting your data and enhancing the security of the website.
